Re: Choosing a soundcard to use with OSS

I was told that OSS does not support midi.

This is correct.

So what is the solution to use midi keyboard when using OSS driver?

  1. Get a big pile of money.
  2. Hire somebody to write MIDI support.

Re: OSS4 Won't Detect Hardware on Lenovo IdeaPad Y510P?

Your hardware is newer than the latest OSS version.

If you know what you're doing, you could add the ID of your HDA controller (0x8c20 or 0x8c21) to oss_hdaudio.c.

There is no OSS driver for any of these ARM devices.

Re: Headphone Option For Xonar Essence STX

The "Headphones Impedance" control just reduces the volume a little. (I didn't think this was worth implementing in the ALSA driver, but people whined until I did.) Being charitable, this might not be a HiFi Voodoo stunt by Asus marketing, but an honest attempt at preventing unhealthily lo...

Re: Reading levels from command line... possible?

Most audio devices to not have a mixer control that allows to read the current input level.

You have to use some tool like http://sox.sourceforge.net/sox.html to capture some data and compute its level (in the case of sox, with the stat command).

All PCI 2.3 devices have the DisINTx bit. Older lspci versions might not show it.

Re: How to enable/disable INTx emulation OSS v4.2 CentOS 5.8

In a Linux driver, this would be the pci_disable/enable_msi() functions.
They work only on devices that actually support MSIs; the Delta 1010LT is way too old for that.

Why are you interested in INTx emulation?

Re: Xonar DG/DGX

The driver cannot make regular sound work, because it depends on stuff other than my sound card?
I meant all the other chips that are connected to the CMI8786.

Why does osstest say it's working fine, I wonder?
Because the driver lies about whether it knows how to enable the analog I/Os.

Re: Xonar DG/DGX

S/PDIF works on all CMI878x cards because it doesn't need any external chips.

The DG/DGX are not supported by OSS.

Re: Can Someone w/ Xonar STX Verify S24_LE?

Programs may have bugs, and it is not always easy to detect them.

In this case, it is easy; just check that the correct bits come out of the digital output.

Re: Can Someone w/ Xonar STX Verify S24_LE?

All CMI8788-based cards require that 24-bit samples are aligned in 32-bit words in memory.

If OSS appends to each sample eight zero bits which are then ignored by the hardware, why would this have any effect on bitperfectness?

Re: Question about OSS and audiophile 24/96, SPDIF out

Using balanced cables would probably work, but is not supported by either the AudioPhile nor by any consumer amp. You could try a coaxial cable, and if this doesn't work, add an SPDIF repeater. If the pile of additional hardware gets too big, it might be easier to just put a laptop, media player, or...

Re: [SOLVED] ASUS Xonar ST Not Working?

Unsure as to how to test if the hardware is upsampling...
There should be a mixer control "vmix0-enable".

Code: Select all

$ ossmix -a | grep -i vmix

Or change the "vmix0-rate" control.

Re: ASUS Xonar ST Not Working?

The new code looks as if it supports only 48 kHz (it never changes the CS2000 clock input); try testing at 44.1 kHz with vmix disabled.
