If you still have the driver for 5.4 installed, that is why you are getting a kernel panic. 5.4 kernel modules are not compatible with 6.0. You need to download and install the OSS package specifically built for 6.0-RELEASE.

That's very similar to what I did: #!/bin/sh ossdir=/usr/local/lib/oss/bin rulesetnum=200 case "$1" in start) if [ -x $ossdir/soundon ]; then $ossdir/soundon /sbin/devfs rule -s $rulesetnum applyset ln -s /dev/dsp2 /dev/dsp ln -s /dev/mixer0 /dev/mixer fi ;; stop) if [ -x $ossdir/s...

Everything seems to be functioning as before. The only problem now is that when OSS is started, all of the devices are given r-------- permissions. Also, no /dev/dsp and no /dev/mixer links are created. To compensate, I have had to put chmod commands and make the links in /etc/rc.local. man 5 devfs...

I am happy to report that OSS is finally working on my ICH5 box now. I am using FreeBSD 6.0-RC1 and the OSS 3.99.3c drivers built for FreeBSD 6.0-RC1. Everything seems to be functioning as before. The only problem now is that when OSS is started, all of the devices are given r-------- permissions. A...

OK we've now got the Intel ICH4 worknig again on FreeBSD 6.0-beta5 I have an ICH5 that still does not work. Whatever changes were made to the OSS driver made matters worse for me. I had FreeBSD 6.0 BETA-5 already installed from 2005-09-20, and I tried the BETA-5 OSS drivers and during the installat...

Re: OSS ver. 3.99.3c still not working on FreeBSD 6.0-BETA4

Hi, I have absolutely no idea why the drivers are failing to activate the AC97 device. Can you see if the nateive FreeBSD drivers work on this machine? We have tested the Freebsd beta-4 drivers on an ATI IXP300 and an ALI M5451 device - there was only one minor change in the code compared to FreeBS...

OSS ver. 3.99.3c still not working on FreeBSD 6.0-BETA4

Since my last post in this thread I have upgraded to FreeBSD 6.0-BETA4 and saw that the OSS drivers were updated to version 3.99.3c. I decided to give them a try today to see if the new version fixed the problem with my codec. It seems I have the same results; the codec will not attach. Here is my n...

Hi Dev,

I upgraded my one installation to 7.0-CURRENT (Jul-25-2005), but I got the same results. The driver simply won't attach to the codec. Any ideas?

Thanks.

To get aRts to work reasonably with OSS, I had to disable Realtime priority and increase the soundbuffer to the maximum. I still have full duplex enabled. aRts worked alot better on a real channel, but with those tweaks, it was fine on a virtual channel.

You probably have hardware incapable of MIDI support. I get the same error and my hardware does not support MIDI. You can disable the probe in soundconf. Go to "Manual Configuration" (I believe that's what that menu item is called) and disable the UART probe.

I think Dev already answered that here: http://www.4front-tech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=472 . I wish automatic allocation worked too, but what I can manage without it. Here's what I do: I use KDE, so I assign the aRts sound server its own channel (/dev/dsp2), xmms its own channel (/dev/dsp3), then ...

Hi Dev, I am unable to boot without ACPI. My box requires it since I cannot disable it in the BIOS (booting just hangs without it). I had the OSS driver working just fine one 5.4-STABLE with ACPI on the exact same hardware. The only error it gave was in probing for the MPU-401 (UART). I don't believ...
