My card is definitely reconized. It says "Xonar Essence STX" where "Engine" is.

Surely somebody else could help you in this.
That must be it. I don't know what could of went wrong though. I followed the directions on the wiki. Is there any options I'm missing out on when using ossmix instead of ossxmix?

(I didn't think this was worth implementing in the ALSA driver, but people whined until I did.)
Being charitable, this might not be a HiFi Voodoo stunt by Asus marketing, but an honest attempt at preventing unhealthily loud output levels …
For headphones that are like 1000+ dollars, you need to use the 600ohms option. But, if your using a lower end headphone like mine, 64ohms is more then enough. The reason its there, is so people with super high end headphones that require high impedance, can be used with this sound card without needing to buy a external headphone amp.
I assume that OSS4 defaults to the high 600ohms impedance option, because everything is much louder then it was with ALSA. It still sounds way better then ALSA. One thing I was reading about in regards to this, was supposily, if you use the wrong impedance option with your headphones, it can reduce the dynamic range of your headphones. Because the more gain you have, the less dynamic range you have.
For example, when record companies re-release recordings of older bands, they "remaster" them. But, all they really do is compress the sound. When you compress something, you just simply add more gain to it so its louder. The thing is, what this does is reduce the dynamic range of the original recording. This could be just one of the reasons people think records sound better then CDs.
Although this is just getting very picky, its always nice to be able to change all the options in your sound card. This is one special sound card, with some very unique features. Going back now, I think I would of rather got an external headphone amp, but I really wanted the DAC this sound card has. Its the best. It does 127 SNR. I'm willing to donate just to have this option included in the drivers.
