Regarding Applets searching Dash Home I come up with The System Settings Sound applet that currently reflects dummy output
and PulseAudio Volume Control that under configuration tab says no cards available to configure.

Code: Select all

cwpjr@cwpjr:~/oss42build$ sudo soundon
[sudo] password for cwpjr:
Previous start of OSS crashed the system
Please resolve the situation and remove file
"/usr/lib/oss/starting". Then start OSS by
running soundon again.

Dang.

As you see I'm 32 bit.

Is archive manager ok for the tar unpack or should I get 7zip?

And thanks again.

7zip should already be installed.

1. Right click on "*.tar.gz" and select "extract here".
2. Copy 7z files into one folder.
3. Unzip them with "archive manager" or 7z

Code: Select all

$ ls
oss4_package_build_20130305.7z.001
oss4_package_build_20130305.7z.002
$ 7z x *.001

However, the current version of Linux kernel of Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) is 3.2.0.58.69 _http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/linux
This seems to mean that you have a very special custom Linux kernel, a sort of "buggy crap".
It may explain everything.

I agree - the system has been bastardized by all the online advice on how to fix the alsa sound issue.

I may be best to clean install ONE MORE TIME and try OSS directly if alsa fails again.

I don't think I can reinstall to sanity from where I'm at.

I have a clear idea of how to try OSS from your help!

So I may be back with a few follow up question later.

Thank you so much igorzwx!

Linux Mint MATE may work well with your old notebook.

I'm doing Qt project. Does MINT support Qt development?

And for either Mint or Ubuntu do I need to purge Pulse stuff before OSS install?

What about Alsa base stuff before OSS install?

1. MINT is Ubuntu with some more drivers and other things.
Qt development is likely to be the same as in Ubuntu.

2. Take Linux Mint MATE (it is the best for your old notebook).

3. PulseAudio must be removed in any case.
Without PulseAudio, your ALSA may work without problems.

4. OSS4's "soundon" will remove ALSA automatically.

5. Before installing OSS4 on Linux Mint MATE, remove "sound applet" (volume applet) from the panel _https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Applets
Right click on it and select "remove".
If this "sound applet" is removed (disabled), "soundon" should be able to unload ALSA without any problems.
When OSS4 is installed, you can re-enable "sound applet" and use it with OSS4 (on MATE desktop).

I have Linux Mint 13 installed on one of my old notebooks (it might be easier to help with it).
Linux Mint 13 "Maya" - MATE (32-bit) _http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=103

My old OSS4 package for Linux Mint 13 (Ubuntu 12.04) has "production quality" enabled:

Code: Select all

$ ossmix | grep vmix0-src
vmix0-src <Fast|High|High+|Production|OFF> (currently Production)

My primary need for sound and A/V would be MP3's and youtube video streaming.

DVD and flv playback from file of secondary need.

Is Mint Mate 13 up to my primary use?

Yes. Everything works on my old notebook with Mint Mate 13 and OSS4:
Skype, mp3s, DVDs, flv, youtube video, etc.

Since this particular notebook is too old (of 2003), it cannot play HD videos and Blu-rays.
Everything else works.

Let me just be clear - You recomment Mint 13 vs. the latest (16?) ?

The latest Linux Mint MATE may (or may not) work better than old ones. I have not tested it.

I have Linux Mint MATE 13 LTS 32bit and Linux Mint MATE 14 32bit.
Linux Mint MATE 14 32bit works better than Linux Mint MATE 13 LTS 32bit.

You may test them all, if you want.

I think I'll install Mint Mate 16 as a second boot and try OSS.

That way I can leave my Qt dev alone on the broken Ubuntu for the time being.

If OSS has problems in Mint 16 I can de-volve Mint to the version you are using, in that partition (if need be) until I am happy and stable.

Should be able to get it installed tonight.

Will be back tomorrow so have a good day igorzwx
