On my very old IMB notebook, the mute hotkey is one way too, it does not unmute.
But volume up/down hotkeys work, they unmute.

Run:

Code: Select all

$ acpi_listen

and press your hotkeys.

To get "OSS Mixer" in the system tray, run:

Code: Select all

$ ossxmix -b

Or press Alt+F2, and type:

Code: Select all

ossxmix -b

You can add this command to "StartUp Applications". Run on terminal:

Code: Select all

$ mate-session-properties

This with open "StartUp Applications Preferences" GUI.
Press "+Add" and add command:

Code: Select all

ossxmix -b

This will start OSS Mixer in background (after reboot, or logout/login), and you will see the OSS Mixer icon in your system tray.

Has anyone tried installing oss-linux-4.2-2010_amd64.deb on Linux Mint 17 (Cinnamon)?
I'm getting the same errors as in the first posts of this thread (that's how I found it).

Problem is, it doesn't look like you can get rid of PulseAudio. Simply uninstalling it will screw with the boot and system won't start.

Any suggestions?

Here's what I get when running sudo soundon:

Update: nevermind, I got it working.
For some reason the first restart didn't do it, but it works now!

This installation of OSS is still functioning but recently the pitch has gotten higher during all playback.
<except osstest!>

OSSTEST is the only thing that sounds correct and it's report looks good:
osstest
Sound subsystem and version: OSS 4.2 (b 2006/201401161521) (0x00040100)
Platform: Linux/i686 3.11.0-12-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 9 16:12:00 UTC 2013

*** Scanning sound adapter #-1 ***
/dev/oss/oss_ich0/pcm0 (audio engine 0): Intel ICH6 (266E)
Note! Device is in use (by PID 0/VMIX) but will try anyway
- Performing audio playback test...
<left> OK <right> OK <stereo> OK <measured srate 47963.00 Hz (-0.08%)>

*** All tests completed OK ***

I posted it here because of the trail of info regarding my OSS version / system etc.

I'll create a new thread in a bit if this is not seen.

Thanks, Clyde

Hi, please don't spam rather unrelated forum threads.
The higher pitch most probably is a result of an increased playback speed. What programs did you test exactly, that produced a higher pitch?

Best open a new thread with some more info and I'll merge/delete this unrelated stuff here ;)

Clyde is not a spammer. It is his thread. We did discuss "everything" here.
Although, of course, it might be reasonable to separate "problems" into different threads.

To test playback one may try ossplay with "exclusive mode" (-R), for example:

Code: Select all

$ ossplay -R -vvvv mumu.wav

or DeadBeef player with Petrov's plugin (exclusive mode), see: _http://www.opensound.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3543&start=90#p19477

or Audacious (exclusive mode). One may simply install Audacious from the official repository, but it should be correctly configured for the purpose.
The problem with Audacious is that the "names" of "configuration options" are rather deceptive.
Moreover, it has a kind of "lossy converter" inside, which cannot be disabled.
See: _http://www.opensound.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3834

PulseAudio must be removed, of course.

I didn't mean to call him a spammer. The intention was indeed to separate different problems into different threads (that's mostly the intention of forum threads), to keep structure and be an easy to find help for people experiencing the same problem.

If this thread was truly used for "everything" (I did not know), you may of course still discuss it here. Then of course one might also call this "Clyde's thread" :)

I actually suppose the culprit may lay in Michał's Audacious plugin: When I uncheck "Enable format conversion by OSS" my sound suddenly gets a (very) slight speed up, resulting in a higher pitched voice, as described by Clyde.

This might be a bug in Audacious.

The option "Enable format conversion by OSS" means "Enable Fast resampler and lossy format conversions"
_http://www.opensound.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3834

The so-called "Fast resampler" is a buggy crap. It can even produce "clipping". This bug was reported some years ago (on this forum).

Since Clyde has a very old computer (with old processor), a rather small buffer of Audacious may cause a similar problem.

My understanding of this is that it lets OSS decide what to use. Ergo when setting resampling to "High" or "Production Quality" in ossxmix, it should use those resampling methods. I don't see any reason why OSS should use it's fast resampler then - if indeed so, I'd call it a bug.

Anyways when enabling "Exclusive Mode" it gets omitted anyhow, doesn't it? (How can a resampler be used when it gets omitted?)

I don't quite understand this though:
Michał wrote:Petrov's plugin has "exclusive mode" which opens device exclusively (omits virtual mixer) and disables cooked mode.
I decided to give more freedom to user, that's why these are separate options. You may want to disable format converter builtin OSS, but still be using virtual mixing. Be aware that if you disable "cooked mode" you need to enable plugins for resampling/channel mixing, otherwise some files won't be played.

How can I get virtual mixing with "Exclusive mode" when it prevents exactly the same?? It says: "Exclusive Mode, to prevent virtual mixing", maybe it should rather be called "Exclusive Mode, to prevent virtual mixing by OSS", right??

Yes (if you mean the "Exclusive Mode" of Audacious).

To be exact, Michał's "Exclusive Mode" is not really exclusive, it does permit certain unwanted crap such as the Fast resampler.

Notice that Petrov's "exclusive mode" means exactly what the name suggests, it does exclude all the unwanted crap.

You cannot get the "virtual mixing of OSS4" with Petrov's "exclusive mode".

Petrov's "exclusive mode" was "inspired" by the option "-R" of ossplay (see man).

"Petrov's plugin has "exclusive mode" which opens device exclusively".
It disables all the virtual crap of OSS4, the "cooked mode" of OSS4, all resamplers of OSS4 and format converters of OSS4.

In other words, with the "exclusive mode" enabled, you can only use the options of Petrov's plugin.
It has own resampler and own format converter.
If your soundcard supports the format and sample rate of a sound file, you can simply configure Petrov's plugin for this particular format and sample rate. In this case, Petrov's plugin will play your sound file "as is" without any conversions, or resampling.

Assumming it's ok to proceed here, instead of creating a new thread:

I mainly listen to 3 web sites audio. The higher pitch issue is with all of them.
1) youtube. McGlauglin Group, Grateful Dead, Gentle Giant, etc.
2) iheart.com listeningto KFI AM640 out of L.A.(http://www.iheart.com/live/KFI-177/). I get what may be clipping on Iheart.com *sometimes*, in that the playback is interrupted periodically, say every 10-15 seconds. This possibly my isp.
3)http://harryshearer.com/le-shows/august-17-2014/ Just tried and got no audio from this site. Probably it's player.

So 1 & 2 are the ones that I'd like to hear at correct pitch.

OK! So MP3's play at correct pitch thru Banshee!

So this is looking like my browser - Firefox 30.0 Mozilla Firefox for Linux Mint mint 1.0

I'll try another browser and post results.

Thanks for all the good info!

I think your exaggerating a little, since Michał - as he said himself, just decided to give more freedom to the user. Now with great power comes great responsibility... assuming Michał's plugin being correctly configured, there will be no drawbacks in comparison to Petrov's.

To be precise:
When activating "Exclusive Mode" and deactivating "Format conversions by OSS" it will give the exact same results as Petrov's "Exclusive Mode".
Am I correct in my explanation?

EDIT:
@cwpjr: Would you install Audacious, play around with the sound plugin and test if it's got the higher pitch or not?
Also what exactly changed on your system that sound suddenly has a higher pitch? Do you have any suspicion?

Not. Audacious is not DeadBeef.

1. Audacious has a lossy format converter inside, which cannot be disabled.

2. Audacious has certain bugs, which may affect sound quality, especially on old computers (with slow processors).

Are you going to say that you are a sort of mathematician, simply because you are able to believe that something is true? It seems to be a religious problem.

If you want to learn something about "format conversion", you may ask for help on Audacity forum.
You may, for example, install Audacity, try different options of its format converter, read the manual, ask questions on the forum, etc.
There is also SoX forum.
