MPlayer2 can destroy notebooks with OSS4

Postby igorzwx » Sat Mar 23, 2013 10:01 pm

Before running MPlayer2, you must configure it for OSS4:

Code: Select all

$ cat ~/.mplayer/config
# Write your default config options here!
ao = oss

MPlayer2/MPlayer configs:

Code: Select all

Otherwise, if MPlayer2 is not configured for OSS4, your processor might be quickly overheated and burned, before you kill MPlayer2.

PROBLEM: MPlayer2 does play mp3 files with OSS4, if its configs are empty (default), but this produces extremely rapid growth of CPU temperature. The processor might be burned in a few seconds.

The removal of PulseAudio does not solve the problem.
One may need to remove libpulse and recompile MPlayer2.

libpulse is not harmless for OSS4 users. If MPlayer2 were compiled to work only with OSS4, such troubles would not happen. The manual is here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3375&start=15#p13781

If MPlayer2 is configured for OSS4 (ao = oss), the processor load seems to be insignificant, and MPlayer2 seems to be harmless. But it may remain dangerous and unpredictable.

Therefore, if you are using MPlayer2, you must have CPU sensors enabled, and a sort of CPU monitoring software (e.g. "top") must be running permanently.

WARNING: OSS4 disables CPU sensors on IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad laptops. To enable CPU sensors, you may need to hack OSS4 viewtopic.php?f=3&t=5204

All this was tested on IBM ThinkPad R40 with Linux Mint 13 LTS.

The problem is that an inexperienced Ubuntu user may try OSS4 as an alternative to buggy PulseALSA.
Such a user is not likely to take the necessary precautions (CPU sensors, etc.).
He (she) is not likely to know anything about MPlayer2 configs.
He (she) may not even know how to kill MPlayer2.
The result of such experiments seems to be predictable.

Thanks igorzwx! This is good to know. I never changed anything in mplayer because it seemed to work.
