oss crashed after install?

I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS several times on my old laptop Hitachi M55 s325.
It uses a builtin pci Intel hda 82801 device:
(lpci) 00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)

Each time sound fails within a few days. Endless troubleshooting between re-installs to no avail.

I've lost too much time and data re-installing and hoping sound would stay working.

So I installed oss-linux-4.2-2008_i386.deb thru the Ubuntu Software Center since it was the default option in downloading the .deb.

After that didn't work I looked at the installation pdf which didn't work since my sudo logon isn't root and so a dpkg install failed.

so here is a log of where I'm at. ( If I have to use dpkg to get this to work please say so and I'll figure out how to be root )

-->
after Ubuntu Software Center OSS install - no sound:
sudo apt-get remove --purge alsa-base
sudo apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio

REINSTALLED OSS thru software center...

cwpjr@cwpjr:~$ osstest
/dev/mixer: No such file or directory

cwpjr@cwpjr:~$ ossinfo
No /dev/mixer device available in your system.
Perhaps Open Sound System is not installed or running.

cwpjr@cwpjr:~$ sudo ossdetect -d -v
/proc/opensound/devfiles: No such file or directory
Cannot connect to the OSS kernel module.
Perhaps you need to execute 'soundon' to load OSS

cwpjr@cwpjr:~$ sudo soundon
Previous start of OSS crashed the system
Please resolve the situation and remove file
"/usr/lib/oss/starting". Then start OSS by
running soundon again.

cwpjr@cwpjr:~$ sudo rm /usr/lib/oss/starting

cwpjr@cwpjr:~$ sudo soundon
FATAL: Module osscore not found.
Loading the osscore module failed

Step 1: Remove (purge) OSS4. The folder /usr/lib/oss/ must be removed.

Step 2: Read the manual _https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound

Type on terminal:

Code: Select all

$ lspci -vnn

and post the output here (mark it as "code").

This seems to be a very old notebook (of 2005, perhaps).
It may work with MATE Desktop (without PulseAudio) _https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MATE_(desktop_environment)

Intel ICH6 AC'97 codec usually works with OSS4.

Linux Mint 16 "Petra" - MATE (32-bit) _http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=145

How to remove PulseAudio:

Code: Select all

$ sudo killall pulseaudio
$ sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio pulseaudio-utils gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio libpulse-browse0 paman pavumeter pavucontrol
$ sudo apt-get install libcanberra-gstreamer

Code: Select all

$ dpkg --help | grep purge

$ apt-get --help | grep purge
   purge - Remove packages and config files

If you "purge" OSS4 with dpkg, the folder /usr/lib/oss should be deleted automatically.
If it is not deleted, you can remove it manually.

It is strongly recommended to remove /usr/lib/oss, before re-installation of OSS4.

Software center only offers reinstall of the package

in the terminal shell i get:

Code: Select all

If I supply a path to it I get the same. and I haven't seen a -path like argument for dpkg YET...

Likewise for:

Code: Select all

Do not use "Software center".

By ctrl-alt-F1 and sudo -i and some commands here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=780961&page=11&p=5055305#post5055305

I've removed OSS4 and it's dir and .conf and dpkg info file entry...

And now sw center says install when looking at the package.

I will do nothing until I get a reply.

As far as I know I can intsall fresh from Ubuntu Software Center....

But I now have root and regular terminal sudo available but expect that dpkg will still not know the package is in my ~/Downloads directory:

~/Downloads/oss-linux-4.2-2008_i386.deb

1. Do not use "Ubuntu Software Center" !
2. Follow the manual _https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound

Installing Prerequisite Packages
The second command is only necessary when building OSS4 from source. The third command contains some recommended packages.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -y binutils libgtk2.0-0 sed gcc libc6
sudo apt-get install -y build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` gawk libtool libgtk2.0-dev
sudo apt-get install -y libesd0 libsdl1.2debian-oss

Installing OSS
Installing from DEB File
Download the OSS deb file from the 4front website. Select the (DEB) packages, with the architecture you have in parenthesis. e.g. 64 bit use (amd64), and 32 bit use (x86). Click submit and download the package. Before you install OSS, Reboot your system so that the ALSA modules will not load or interfere with it. When you log back in, use the terminal to install the OSS deb file (GDebi fails to install this .deb for some reason)

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i oss-linux*.deb

So I've installed the prereq's with 1 issue:

Code: Select all

cwpjr@cwpjr:/usr/lib$ sudo apt-get install -y libesd0 libsdl1.2debian-oss
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libsdl1.2debian-oss is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  libsdl1.2debian

E: Package 'libsdl1.2debian-oss' has no installation candidate
cwpjr@cwpjr:/usr/lib$ sudo apt-get install -y libesd0 libsdl1.2debian
Reading package lists... Done
...
WORKED

Then I deleted my original download and redownloaded the .deb, which went to ~/Downloads and again dpkg can't see it...

Code: Select all

cwpjr@cwpjr:/usr/lib$ sudo dpkg -i oss-linux*.deb
dpkg: error processing oss-linux*.deb (--install):
 cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
 oss-linux*.deb

same in my root login, even if I append ~/Downloads to the PATH.

It said that ALSA is loaded and it failed to unload it.

1. Run

Code: Select all

$ sudo soundon

If it fails, "Reboot and try running soundon again".

Type on terminal:

Code: Select all

$ lsmod | grep snd
$ lsmod | grep oss
$ dmesg | grep oss

and post the output here.

After reboot here is the rquested info:

1. Remove OSS4:

Code: Select all

$ sudo dpkg --purge oss-linux

2. Install prerequisite packages:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -y binutils libgtk2.0-0 sed gcc libc6
sudo apt-get install -y build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r` gawk libtool libgtk2.0-dev
sudo apt-get install -y libesd0 libsdl1.2debian

3. Compile OSS4 from Mercurial. The manual is here: _https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound#Building_from_Source

Obtaining the OSS Source using Mercurial

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -y mercurial
cd /opt
sudo hg clone http://opensound.hg.sourceforge.net:8000/hgroot/opensound/opensound oss-devel

Creating a Build Directory
OSS needs an empty directory to build in. Using the example below will create a directory in your /home folder (~)

Code: Select all

cd ~/
sudo rm -rf oss42build
mkdir oss42build
cd oss42build/

Build & Install

Code: Select all

NO_WARNING_CHECKS=yes /opt/oss-devel/configure --enable-libsalsa=NO
make
sudo make deb
sudo dpkg -i oss*.deb

_https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenSound#Building_from_Source

If you have a kind of "sound applet" (volume applet) on the panel, remove it before installing OSS4.
See: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Applets
When ALSA is loaded, the sound applet is using ALSA modules (snd). It makes difficult for "soundon" to unload ALSA.
