Loading oss_hdaudio module very audible.

Does anyone else have that issue, that loading the module produces a high volume, crackling noise? I've had that issue for ages, but now that I'm in the process of setting up OSS4 from scratch I thought I might just as well ask you guys. Also because the Alsa driver, which I was forced to use briefly, does not exhibit that characteristic.
Loading osscore with mixer_muted=1 doesn't have any effect on this matter. Might be some (ICH8) card initialization code being somewhat forceful (?)
If any of you ran into the same issue and figured out a way around it, advice would be much appreciated.
