Virtualbox and OSS4

Postby KayakJim » Fri Jul 09, 2010 1:26 am

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop 64-bit and installed OSS4. I have Windows XP SP3 running in VirtualBox v3.2.6 and have set the machine to use OSS for the sound. While the sound is great within Ubuntu, I can barely hear sound from VB even with the volume control maxxed out in both XP and Ubuntu.

Any ideas how to correct the issue?

Can you post output of 'ossmix -a'? Perhaps one of vmix's app volume controls is near-muted?

This is what is returned with from "ossmix -a":

Code: Select all

Selected mixer 0/High Definition Audio STAC9200
Known controls are:
jack.black.mode1 <select|input> (currently select)
jack.black.select1 <pcm|select> (currently pcm)
jack.black.select2 [<leftvol>:<rightvol>] (currently 38.9:38.9 dB)
jack.int-speaker.mode <select|input> (currently select)
jack.black.mode2 <select|input> (currently select)
record.select.select1 [<leftvol>:<rightvol>] (currently 39.9:39.9 dB)
record.select.select2 [<leftvol>:<rightvol>] (currently 19.4:19.4 dB)
misc <-28.-8dB|-19.-2dB|-9.-6dB|0.0dB|mute> (currently 131(too large (a=5)?))
vmix0-enable ON|OFF (currently ON)
vmix0-rate <decimal value> (currently 48000) (Read-only)
vmix0-channels <Stereo|Multich> (currently Stereo)
vmix0-src <Fast|High|OFF> (currently Fast)
vmix0-outvol <monovol> (currently 25.0 dB)
vmix0-invol <monovol> (currently 25.0 dB)
vmix0.pcm4 [<leftvol>:<rightvol>] (currently 25.0:25.0 dB)
vmix0.pcm5 [<leftvol>:<rightvol>] (currently 25.0:25.0 dB)
vmix0.pcm6 [<leftvol>:<rightvol>] (currently 25.0:25.0 dB)
vmix0.pcm7 [<leftvol>:<rightvol>] (currently 25.0:25.0 dB)

Did I need to have the XP Virtualbox running? It was not when I ran the above.

Well, it looks fine. I also tested VBox with a Linux image and it worked... Did you choose "OSS Audio Driver" under "Settings"->"Audio" in VBox?

I did indeed.

I just updated my system which included a new kernel requiring a rebuild for VirtualBox. After rebooting I now have sound within my XP VB guest.

Could the prior problem have been due to OSS not being installed until after VirtualBox was installed and therefore not included when the kernel was rebuilt?

IIRC VBox audio driver is in userland, so I doubt it. Also, there's a working pulse driver even though pulse is probably loaded later.
