nv66 gnome volume control doesn't affect OSS devices

Nevada 66 on an Ultra 40. The built-in AMD hdaudio is disabled in the BIOS, SB Live!
installed in a PCI slot. The device is recognised, seems to work with audio applications
just fine. But...

...the gnome volume control applet (mixer-applet?) doesn't affect the volume of the
audio and 'mute' doesn't.

Volume control with ossxmix works just fine.

Is this the expected behaviour?

Yes, this is expected - you can only control the application volume via gnome volume - eg if you're playing Real Audio, the Gnome Volume will control realaudio's volume. It will not control OSS volume.

ossxmix will give you additional features that Gnome will not. So why bother with it.?


We are working on a new gnome volume control that should support the new OSS v4.0 mixer features.

I guess you need to use Cuckoo to be able to use the Gnome mixer, but Cuckoo is only available for Linux: http://www.4front-tech.com/cuckoo.html

And as far as I know, it is impossible to make Gnome mixer use libSALSA.

Libsalsa and Cuckoo only apply to Linux and ALSA - there is no support for Solaris yet.

The Sun Type 7 keyboard has volume buttons, which Gnome is happy to map to
volume up/down/mute, but they affect (only) the Gnome mixer. I guess I could have them
mapped to an external application...

If only the internal sound device on the ultra40 wasn't so noisy - clicks and hum all
of the time

This problem will be solved after the Gnome volume control applet is converted/rewritten to use the OSS 4.0 mixer API. However this is likely to take couple of months.
