As soon as I try to modprobe for oss_sblive, I get a total system freeze.

I am using the tar file oss-v4.2-build2004-src-gpl.tar.bz2 from stable to compile.
My installed drivers are
oss_hdaudio #Intel High Definition Audio (ICH8)
oss_usb #Generic USB audio/MIDI device (BETA)
I am using modprobe so as to not crash it as soon as i plugin my card. (oss_hdaudio works fine. i can run osstest on it)
My system configuration - lenovo t61 - ubuntu 10.10 32-bit
The crash is not generating any logs in /var/log/messages, /var/log/kern.log or /var/log/soundon.log. There is not single line extra in these logs when I do a modprobe. The system just freezes and then when I remove the card, the machine reboots. The card works fine in alsa (but I don't get any spdif ac3 output, which is why I am trying to use oss)
I tried "detect_trace=1". No messages at all in the logs.
I reproduced these steps using Arch linux as well. Exactly the same result - Total system freeze, and no panic on screen or kernel logs.
(I did some try some irq related troubleshooting and removing some modules, but I'll leave that for a later post - didn't make any difference - don't know if it is relevant)
I'd appreciate any insight into this.
